Taking place in the timeframe of 1942 to 1945, First Avenger tells the story of US Army reject Steve Rogers ( Chris Evans), who volunteers for a secret government program which transforms him into the very epitome of human potential. note If you discount the flashbacks to millennia ago in Thor and Eternals. It is the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe chronologically.
This film is not to be confused with the 1990 film Captain America, the two Captain America TV movies from the 1970s, or the classic movie serials from the 1940s, all of which have no relation to this film (aside from being based on the same comic book character). I won't be sad to welcome Ottley back at the end of the year, but I'm certainly enjoying Walker's return and the shift in narrative focus while it lasts.Captain America: The First Avenger is a 2011 action/adventure based on the Marvel Comics character Captain America, produced by Marvel Studios, and directed by Joe Johnston ( The Rocketeer, Jurassic Park III) it is the fifth film in (and in some ways, a prequel to) the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its Phase 1. And unlike some recent issues, this one offers a satisfactory amount of content. After four or five issues of watching Invincible shed gallons of blood, it's a nice change of pace. Maybe it's the colorful assortment of aliens in lieu of human characters, or maybe it's the fact that Kirkman is determined not to take himself too seriously as he builds towards this major storyline. The tone of this issue is surprisingly light given the subject matter. Kirkman allows room for plenty of humor along the way. It's a treat reading this pair in action, as they always seem to play well off of each other. As much as this short arc is setting the stage for "The Viltrumite War", I care far less about that than the simple dynamic between Omni-Man and Allan. As we've learned in the past year, the Viltrumites are now an endangered species, and the pair have seen an opening in which to begin their attack. Kirkman pulls his focus away from Earth and onto Omni-Man and Allan's quest to topple the Viltrumite Empire. So while the overall visual effect is less of a throwback than it could have been, I'd say the issue is better off for it. Just as Ottley's work hit a new level thanks to FCO Plascencia's colors, Walker is greatly aided by McCaig. A great deal of credit should go to colorist Dave McCaig. It has far more depth and energy to it, which helps Walker stand on more equal footing. By comparison, his artwork here is almost unrecognizable.
His pencils in those early issues were fairly flat and sparse compared to Ottley's work. Part of me was almost worried at the visual transition.
